The Zuni Youth Enrichment Project (ZYEP) is a transformative community initiative dedicated to fostering the holistic development and well-being of Zuni youth.
Established with the vision of empowering young individuals through culturally rooted programs, ZYEP offers a diverse range of activities, including sports, arts, and educational workshops, all designed to enhance physical, mental, and emotional health. By integrating traditional Zuni values and contemporary educational practices, ZYEP strives to create a supportive environment where youth can thrive, build resilience, and develop a strong sense of identity and purpose.
The Zuni people today are federally recognized as the Zuni Tribe of the Zuni Reservation, New Mexico.
Project Overview:
Serving over 1,000 youth annually, ZYEP engages Zuni youth and their families through a variety of strength-based, health-promoting activities rooted in Zuni culture and community. Addressing health disparities stemming from historical and contemporary oppression, they leverage the strengths of their traditions to combat these challenges directly. Testimonials from participants highlight the profound impact of these programs: "This was literally one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I had so much fun and learned so much about so many things," and "I’ve learned a lot about myself and how I can be a better role model to the youth of our community."
Installing solar at the Zuni Youth Center will reduce electricity expenses and carbon footprint while promoting renewable energy. This will enable ZYEP to reallocate resources towards enhancing their programs and facilities, furthering their mission to support Zuni youth in every possible way. The planned 26.88 kW solar array will generate 48,250 kWh of electricity annually, avoiding 74,311 lbs. of CO2 emissions. The cost savings will be reinvested directly into youth programming, ensuring sustainable development.
ZYEP is committed to integrating environmentally conscious practices within their policies and procedures, serving as a learning hub for solar energy. They plan to educate stakeholders about the benefits of the solar project through presentations and informational materials, demonstrating their commitment to a sustainable future for Zuni youth.
