The Harry Tompson Center is a collaborative day shelter in New Orleans that supports individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Serving more than 200 people each day, the Center provides a calm, dignified space where guests can access essential daytime services and connect with care teams working toward stability, health, and housing.
The Harry Tompson Center is located within the Rebuild Center, a shared facility that also houses two mission-aligned nonprofit partners. Lantern Light Ministries offers outreach, hospitality, and basic-needs support for individuals experiencing homelessness, while DePaul USA provides supportive housing services with intensive case management as well as weekly wellness programming. Together, these organizations work side by side to deliver more coordinated care and stronger outcomes for the New Orleans community.
Project Overview:
Reliable electricity is essential to the work happening inside the Rebuild Center—from powering showers and laundry to maintaining safe, welcoming spaces during extreme heat, storms, and periods of high community need.
A 43.8 kW rooftop solar array will be installed above the Harry Tompson Center portion of the building, made possible by roof improvements completed last year. While the system is hosted by the Harry Tompson Center, the resulting energy savings will help support operations for all three nonprofits working within the Rebuild Center.
The solar array is expected to generate approximately 56,347 kWh of clean electricity each year, offsetting an estimated 47% of the building’s electricity use. By reducing utility costs and strengthening long-term operational stability, solar helps ensure that resources can remain focused on what matters most: providing essential, life-stabilizing services with dignity and care.
Through this shared-benefit model, one solar installation strengthens multiple missions—supporting hygiene, health, hospitality, and housing services for people experiencing homelessness across New Orleans.
