The Lorge School, located in New York City, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering students with special needs through individualized educational programs and supportive services. The school focuses on fostering academic growth, social-emotional development, and life skills to help students achieve their fullest potential. Its mission is to create an inclusive, nurturing environment where every child feels valued and capable of success.
The Lorge School's mission is to empower students with special needs to overcome challenges and thrive in a supportive and inclusive community. By integrating personalized instruction, therapeutic interventions, and real-world experiences, the school equips students with the tools they need to achieve independence and lifelong learning.
Project Overview:
Since its founding in 1961, The Lorge School has been a trusted resource for families, providing research-based, student-centered educational services. Their programs are designed in direct response to the needs of the students and families they serve, utilizing evidence-based practices and strategies tailored to meet individual goals.
To further its commitment to sustainability and innovation, The Lorge School is exploring the implementation of a solar energy system. This initiative will not only reduce the school’s electricity expenses year over year but also serve as a living example for their science and environmental education programming.
The planned 37.26 kW solar array will generate 40,525 kWh of electricity annually, preventing 41,507 lbs. of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. By adopting clean energy, The Lorge School aims to integrate environmental awareness into its curriculum, inspiring students to become advocates for a sustainable future.
A reduction in energy costs will allow The Lorge School to reinvest in its core mission, providing additional resources for classroom instruction, therapeutic services, and staff development. This ensures that the school continues to meet the diverse and evolving needs of its students.
"The Lorge School operates on a very tight budget and every dollar saved from conversion to solar energy would go into educational programs for the students. ", says Harry Gonzalez, executive director at The Lorge School
