Maine High Adventure

GOAL | SUMMER 2026

Maine High Adventure (MHA) is an independent, not-for-profit outdoor education and adventure organization based in Bangor, Maine, and the outdoor trekking program of the Katahdin Area Council, Scouting America. For more than 60 years, MHA has delivered immersive, hands-on wilderness experiences—most notably guided canoe treks for older Scouts and Venturers—designed to build leadership, confidence, and resilience. Through high-quality outdoor programming rooted in exploration, teamwork, and environmental stewardship, Maine High Adventure connects youth, families, and community groups with Maine’s natural landscapes. Programs are based at an off-grid camp on Grand Lake Matagamon, just outside Baxter State Park in northern Maine, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and responsible land stewardship.

Project Overview:

Maine High Adventure’s remote base camp relies on electricity for essential operations, including water pumping, emergency communications, food preparation, staff housing, and basic connectivity. While the site is intentionally off-grid to preserve its wilderness character, reliable power is critical to safety and daily operations.

Solar energy has supplied much of the base’s power for decades, reducing reliance on propane generation. However, the existing solar system has aged and can no longer meet current needs. This project will upgrade and expand MHA’s solar capacity, improving energy reliability, lowering operating costs, and reinforcing the organization’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

The planned 1,78 kW solar array is expected to generate approximately 2500 kWh of clean electricity annually, preventing an estimated 2,433 of CO₂ emissions each year. Long-term energy savings will allow Maine High Adventure to reinvest resources into program quality, facility improvements, and expanded access to outdoor education for youth and communities in the Bangor region and beyond.
